Celebrate the Holidays With Puerto Rican Coquito!
This post is written in partnership with Goya.
Move over, eggnog. This year, we’re celebrating the holidays with Coquito!
New to Coquito? Well, welcome to the party. Not sure what kind of party you’ve just walked into? Think of coquito as a coconutty twist on eggnog, rich with coconut milk, cream of coconut, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon and vanilla. A splash of rum makes it extra festive, if you so choose.
What is Coquito?
Coquito is a traditional Puerto Rican beverage that’s sipped throughout the holiday season. It’s often compared to eggnog because it’s equally thick and creamy and has a similar flavor profile, but what makes it really special is that it’s bursting with tropical coconut flavor. Thanks to GOYA® Cream of Coconut and GOYA® Coconut Milk, Coquito is a bold, rich and tropical way to holiday.
How to Make Coquito
It couldn’t be easier to whip up a batch of Coquito. There are varying methods, for sure, some calling for you to warm the ingredients together and others taking a simpler approach.
Our favorite recipe keeps things easy and delicious: You simply pour a can of GOYA® Cream of Coconut and a can of GOYA® Coconut Milk into a blender along with two cans of GOYA® Evaporated Milk and 1/2 cup of GOYA® Sweetened Condensed Milk. Add a splash of vanilla extract, a bit of ground cinnamon, and some white rum (if desired), then blend everything together on high until the mixture is frothy and well combined.
Next, pour the mixture into a glass bottle and chill it in the refrigerator. To enjoy, simply give your bottle of Coquito a good shake, pour it into individual glasses, garnish with ground cinnamon, and serve!
The Perfect Beginning
It’s hard to track down the origin of the drink (and trust us, we tried), but one thing is certainly true: there are traditionalists, and there are families who love making their own unique recipes, varying the amount and type of rum, sweetener and method. We suggest trying a classic recipe like the one below before striking out on your own!
Fun Coquito Variations
We love to sip on this classic version of Coquito all through the holiday season, but like so many recipes, this is a drink that you can play around with. Don’t take yourself too seriously, experiment and have fun! Here are a few of our favorite twists:
- Don’t drink alcohol? Skip the rum and make it alcohol-free for everyone at home!
- Try other winter spices in addition or in place of the cinnamon. Ground nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and allspice are nice choices,
- Get creative with the rum! If you are spiking your Coquito, try replacing the white rum with an aged or spiced rum to lend extra warmth to the drink.
- Blend it! While untraditional, blending your coquito mixture with ice makes a slushy, wintery treat!
