Nine Favorite Things. – Half Baked Harvest
[ad_1]
Thanks for joining me for another Nine Favorite Things post.
Happy Mother’s Day everyone! Whether you’re a mom yourself, celebrating your mom, or celebrating a mom figure in your life, I’m hoping everyone is taking the day to chill and do something they love with someone they love! Asher is stepping in for Mother’s Day this year and really pulling out all the stops. I’ve been wrapped up in work and haven’t had much time to prep and plan like I usually do. So I am thankful that little girl is taking charge and giving me my marching orders today. She’s can be a real boss lady!
On Asher’s agenda is to make one of mom’s favorite, easy breakfasts, a simple dutch baby, which I just taught her how to make. She is sooo grown up now it’s insane. No longer a little kid, she is much more like a teenager (she’s now 12!). Makes me so sad, but at the same time, I love watching her grown into herself.
Anyway, a special breakfast followed by dinner, which will be a very small crowd this year, as my brothers were not able to make it back to Colorado to celebrate. We’ll facetime them for sure, but it’s just going to be my dad, little Mr. Oslo, Asher, and myself this year. So a simple day, but my mom really isn’t into an extravagant Mother’s Day anyway. Wishing the weather was nicer, but we’ll make do!
Question: How are you guys celebrating Mother’s Day this year? Last year was a bit of a bust, so I hope you’re all able to make up for it this year!
So this week was a real mix of high-highs and low-lows, which was interesting. All in all, Tuesday was just not a good day, as we received multiple rounds of not so awesome news. Nothing life-threatening or anything like that, so we’ll get over it, but just some work-related news that was disappointing. It happens.
As you guys know I’ve been working tirelessly on a project with a strict deadline. It’s been really, really tough for me to meet while still trying to keep up with blog and Instagram content. I’m still working non-stop on things in hopes we can still make it happen. But we got some news on Tuesday that wasn’t very promising, so that was a bummer. At first, I was really down on myself about it. But I’m trying to ease up and make myself realize that I’m only one person. I can only do so much. It’s hard though and I am not the greatest at it.
Aside from that news, we also had a product launch project I’ve been working on for a while now fall through. A lot of time and effort went out the door. But to be upfront, I’m actually OK with letting go of it. We just couldn’t seem to get the project to a place where I felt proud to put my name on it. I’d never, ever, share anything with you guys that I didn’t fully 120% LOVE. So, kind of sad, but in the long run, for the best.
So while Tuesday was hard, I managed to turn the remainder of the week around. We had a few sunny days and from there, things just started to get better and better. And while one project fell through, another even more exciting project is moving forward…and at full speed. And this project I am SO excited about. That one is my high-high. And though I am nervous, it’s certainly very exciting!
Question: How do you deal with hard, disappointing news? Any special ways to help cope?
Aside from all that, not much new to report around here…wait…that’s not true! You probably noticed our whole new look. Yes, we finally launched our new HBH redesign! What do you guys think?
My mom, who you guys all know works on the backend of the blog, and our HBH team member, Margaret, have been working on this new redesign for months. Actually, we started the process well over a year ago, so this has been a very long time coming. We are so excited to be launching our new layout. I’m sharing more details below in favorite#5. We all hope you love it!!
Coming up this week, it’s a bit of a wild card week as I don’t have everything planned out to a T just yet. But we have a vibrant spring recipe coming Monday and a fun cocktail on Saturday too!
Have a wonderful Mother’s Day everyone!!
1. Things I’m loving, wanting, and excited to try…
obsessed…with butterfly jewelry right now. This diamond butterfly necklace from The Sis Kiss is gorgeous. This slightly smaller butterfly necklace is perfect for layering. And these stud butterfly earrings are the sweetest (I wear these every day).

ordered….Reformation loungewear and Zulu & Zephyr. Both have the cutest basics. This sweater and matching shorts are in my cart. Perfect for a summer beach vacay…which I hope to take!
loving…Grace Rose Farm flowers. You guys, if you haven’t ordered any of these roses, you have to snatch some up soon. They are without a doubt the prettiest roses I have seen, I’m loving them.

4. Favorite Questions of the Week.
q: how long does each recipe take to film?
a: it really depends on the recipe, but filming recipes from start to finish for IG takes a while. I spent 4 hours on one today and need to finish it tomorrow! But they don’t all take that long. average is 2-3 hours
q: how many years part are you from Asher?
a: we’re 15 years apart and we don’t live together. Asher lives with my parents ?
q: what inspires your recipes?
a: I’m always inspired most by the seasons and people around me. When seasons change, my ideas change with them. Right now it’s fresh herbs, spring strawberries, and old-school vintage recipes that are inspiring me. In the fall, that changes to cozier recipes with lots of apples and pumpkins. And then of course, my fam!! They’re always sending me new recipes to make based on their travels or something they tried at a restaurant
q: what filters do you use on your photos?
a: for the blog, no I don’t use any filters, but I do edit my photos in Lightroom to make small adjustments. for IG stories I’ll use the tezza app or edit the photo on my phone within the photo app.
q: what is something that makes you happy every day?
a: hiking every morning…then coffee!!
q: what do your mom and dad do?
a: we all work together on HBH! ? But before HBH my dad sold institutional bonds and my mom has always been a stay-at-home mom (8 kids and all…), but she’s always done SO much more than just being “mom”. That woman can get shit done. I learned how to literally never accept the word NO from her
q: what was the worst thing your brothers did to you growing up?
a: oh man, they’ve put me through it, but honestly not that bad…or so I remember. I think I was more annoying to them than they’ve ever been to me…though there was that time @stuntdickgerry had a party when my parents were out of town and my younger brother and I got locked in our parent’s room for the night ? but they didn’t really pull pranks ??♀️
q: what is the secret to perfect chocolate chip cookies?
a: always add a few extra chocolate chunks before baking and then, always, always, underbake them just slightly (they cook more on the pan once you take them out of the oven)
q: what are the best Arizona restaurants?
a: for everyone asking about Arizona restaurants, sounds like you should hit up Tapas Papa Frita in Scottsdale!
q: what is the one place you want to travel to?
a: that’s hard, but currently, I am craving the Bahamas!
q: what did you end up naming the baby goats?
a: Wiggles, Twister, and Rocket
q: what do you do with the goat milk?
a: we’ve made cheese, but we really mostly just use their milk…it’s all we drink
5. The New HBH Site!!
I”m sure you all have noticed by now, but we finally launched that re-design I’ve been teasing about for months. As I mentioned above, my mom and Margaret have been working every day on this site design to ensure it’s user-friendly for you guys! We are so excited about the new look! This is still a work in progress. I wasn’t able to add all that I wanted to today’s post – but we got a majority of it up.
The new feature that we’re most excited about is our Recipe Box. You can now save recipes to your personal recipe box for easy access! This was a common request, so we are so excited to be launching it! You can save recipes in all the places I am highlighting below, just create an account in My Recipe Box, then save away!
Access your recipe box at the top of the HBH page.
Save the recipes on each recipe card.
Take some time to look around the new site today and let us know what you think. And PLEASE, let us know if you see anything that needs adjusting. We just launched last night and we’re already aware of issues that need a fix…Monday, Monday. We’d really love it if you’d help us out by letting us know what you love…and maybe even what you don’t love too!
6. Happy Mother’s Day…a Note To My Mom.
I could write a book on this woman, our relationship, and just how incredible she is. As a kid, she was my everything. And today, she’s still my everything, though our relationship has changed so much over the years. I was desperate for her attention growing up with all my siblings. I think even more so since at the time I was the only girl. We were more like best friends, versus mother and daughter.
Today, we’re not only mother and daughter, but we’re also business partners, so it can be very interesting. And, not going to lie, it can be difficult at times. Working with family is the best thing ever and I wouldn’t want to run HBH any other way. But that’s not to say it doesn’t come with its own set of challenges. Regardless of any of that, I always know that at the end of the day, no matter what, there isn’t a single person in the world who loves and supports me more than her. She’s always there for me. Through every high, and more importantly, the lowest lows. She always, always makes every situation ok, because, in her mind, there’s a positive to every negative.
She’s my therapist, my best friend, momager at times, and so much more. I can’t imagine my life without her. And I am so thankful for the incredible lessons she taught me and my brothers. Our family as a whole is really genuinely nice and caring to each other (or at least I like to think so) and that’s all because of her. The thing she has instilled in all of her kids, and what I believe is one of her most important messages, treat others the way you would want to be treated. Kindness is key, and of course, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
That has been especially helpful for me as we’ve grown into the HBH brand and taken on more followers. With growth does come more internet trolls. Instead of pushing back, I always have my mom in the back of my head saying, “lead with kindness…kindness always succeeds”. I haven’t found anything to be more true!
So thank you to my mom. The most caring, selfless person I know. Thank you for the lessons you’ve taught me, the work you put into HBH, and every other thing you do every single day. Which is about a million and one things, because with eight kids she’s always doing something for someone.
And lastly, over the last couple of years, thank you for showing me just how important and rewarding giving back can be. My mom is the biggest advocate for working with charities, and in the last couple of years, we’ve been working closely with so many (listed out below in case you want to check them out). It’s honestly been a high point in the madness of the world.
Double lastly, thanks for bring Oslo into this family. We were a complete crew before, but our family feels even more complete now with Oslo in it. I can’t even imagine the fam without his sweet little face.
Love you mom, and Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, steps mom, and everyone in between!
question: what do you love most about your mom or mom figure? What has she taught you in life?
I REALLY wanted to add photos here, but we had a lot of trouble with the new site (we still have some tweaking). I was unable to upload my photos here (maybe next week?). Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of support late on a Saturday night.
Consider giving to:
Chrysalis House – A residential treatment center in Maryland for women dealing with addiction. They are different because they allow women to bring their children, very much boosting their success rates. The women can also stay in treatment for up to a year. The majority of their funding comes from public sources. Donate here.
Special Angels – This is the agency my parents went through to adopt Oslo. So many good things happen through this agency that I don’t even know how to write it in one sentence. This agency places special needs babies with special families. Donate here.
Baby2Baby – Provides children living in poverty with diapers, clothing, and all the basic necessities that every child deserves. Donate here.
Project Cuddle – Provides resources and shelter for pregnant girls and women in crisis. They are simply there to help and not to judge. Donate here.
